Resources for sharing research and publications
Need assistance with sharing research and publications?
The publication and sharing of scholarly works and research can take many forms, from traditional books and journals, to more novel modalities in visual and digital formats. Depending on the method that best suits the project, there are various groups at Duke ready to support investigators throughout the process.
Duke University Libraries resources
Copyright and Information Policy | library-cip@duke.edu
- Copyright and legal issues in publishing — For any publishing project, it’s important to understand copyright, fair use, and other legal issues that may come into play. It is vital to use other people’s work appropriately, and thoughtfully decide how to license your own work.
- Sharing research publications openly — The Duke Libraries support various open access models and initiatives.
- Duke-Supported Open Access Initiatives can defray article processing charges (APCs) for gold open access in journals or offer no-cost publishing options for researchers’ books and articles. Contact open-access@duke.edu with questions.
- DukeSpace repository of works written by Duke faculty, staff, and students is available to researchers to make their research openly available at no cost to them. See the guide to depositing in DukeSpace. Works in DukeSpace are visible on Scholars@Duke profiles.
- All U.S. federal funding agencies, including NIH and NSF, require federal grant-funded research products (peer reviewed publications and research data) to be made publicly accessible through designated repositories such as PubMed Central and NSF PAR. Library staff can assist researchers in navigating federal public access requirements for publications and data.
- Maximizing reach and tracking impact — There are various ways to track the usage and impact of your research, including but not limited to:
- Citation metrics such as h-index and journal impact factor (JIF). The Duke Libraries maintain a guide to research metrics. You can contact library-cip@duke.edu to consult with staff on measuring your research impact.
- Altmetric allows researchers to track attention publications are getting in sources outside the scholarly literature. This includes mentions of the publication from news sources, blogs, social media, and government policy documents.
- ORCID is a profile system and nonproprietary unique identifier for scholars that can be connected to systems of record such as SciENcv, most major publishers and funders, Duke Elements, and your Duke profile through the OIT Self-Service portal.
