New Workshop Series on Engaging Policymakers in Your Research
The Center for Community-Engaged Scholarship is launching a new workshop series, “Making Research Matter,” designed to help Duke researchers strengthen their ability to engage effectively with policymakers. The series focuses on building meaningful short- and long‑term partnerships that increase the relevance, quality, and impact of academic research in public policy contexts.
Led by Jenni Owen, Professor of the Practice at the Sanford School of Public Policy, and Debbie Goldstein, Associate Vice President for Community-Engaged Scholarship at Duke Community Affairs/Office of Interdisciplinary Programs, the program draws on their extensive experience in government, policy engagement, and community collaboration. Participants will gain practical skills for navigating policy environments, identifying opportunities for engagement, and communicating research in ways that resonate with decision-makers.
The workshop series will meet monthly from late February through November 2026, with seven total sessions offered in a mix of in‑person and virtual formats. While the curriculum emphasizes state and local government in North Carolina, the concepts and strategies will be broadly applicable across policy levels and geographic contexts. Participation is free.
The program is open to individual researchers or small teams of two to three, including faculty, research staff, and graduate students. Ideal participants will bring questions about how to connect their current or emerging research to policy opportunities. The cohort will include approximately 10–15 participants representing 6–10 project teams, selected through a brief application process.
Topics will include:
- Understanding policy engagement and government structures
- Developing partnerships with government entities
- Communicating effectively with policymakers
Sessions will feature speakers, lectures, skill‑based workshops, and hands‑on practice using participants’ own research projects.
Those interested are encouraged to submit the short application by January 30, with notifications sent by February 9. Tentative workshop dates include February 24, March 24, April 28, June 2, and additional sessions in August, October, and November.
