CITI training for Community Partners

If the Duke Health IRB will be serving as the IRB of record on a protocol, and there are external key personnel engaged in research, those personnel will be required to complete Human Subject Protection (HSP) Training. See Key Personnel Qualifications policy for more information on who is considered engaged in research.

Process for external personnel accessing, completing, and uploading HSP training

For personnel affiliated with another institution (i.e., another university), they will likely fulfill this requirement at their home institution or site. For personnel who may not have such an affiliation (i.e., a community partner), they may satisfy the HSP Training requirement as follows:

Go to the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) website to begin the registration process

  • Select “Register”
  • Select “Select Your Organization Affiliation”
  • Enter “Duke University Campus IRB” [this is not an error; community partners engaged on DUHS IRB protocols will be completing University modules.  Please do NOT select Duke University Campus IRB SSO]
  • Review/agree to Terms of Use and Privacy Policy; Affirm that you are affiliated with the Duke University Campus IRB
  • Select “Create a CITI program account”
  • Provide information requested in the Registration Process, and select “No” for CE functionality

Affiliate with the Duke University Campus IRB

  • Provide an email address (preferably not a personal email, but rather the one associated with your business, agency, or company)
  • Select the role that best characterizes your involvement in the protocol
  • Select your language preference.
  • For Question 2 (GDPR & Human Subjects Research in the US), mark “Not at this time.”

Enroll in the 6 courses required by DUHS IRB

  • In “Courses Ready to Begin”, select “Start Now”
    • This takes you to the page where you can select the modules.
    • External personnel on DUHS Protocols should complete:
      • History and Ethnical Principles (located in Required Modules)
      • Duke University (located in Required Modules)
      • The following elective modules:
        • Defining Research with Human Subjects
        • The Federal regulations
        • Assessing risk
        • Informed Consent
        • Privacy/Confidentiality

  • After you have passed the Duke University module, select “Return to Gradebook” – here you can select the remaining modules and take the associated quizzes.
  • Complete a total of 7 courses to satisfy the requirement

Download a copy of your transcript

  • After quizzes are complete, select “Return to Gradebook”
  • Select “My Records” at the top of the page
  • In the row entitled “Basic Course”, click “View” in the Gradebook column.
  • Print this page as a PDF and save

Provide the PDF copy to the person at Duke who will be adding you as key personnel
