NSF notice on use of generative AI in the proposal process
In mid-December, NSF provided guidelines for use of generative artificial intelligence (AI) for those writing and reviewing proposals. NSF is unable to protect non-public information shared with third-party generative AI from being used. Therefore, they have established the following for reviewers and proposers:
- NSF reviewers are prohibited from uploading any content from proposals, review information and related records to non-approved generative AI tools.
- Proposers are encouraged to indicate in the project description the extent to which, if any, generative AI technology was used and how it was used to develop their proposal.
The full notice can be found here. There is related guidance for NIH proposals here.
