Research with Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI)

A research project is subject to federally mandated CUI protections if the materials/data supplied or generated are classified as CUI.  CUI must be handled, shared, stored, and properly dispositioned to prevent unauthorized access, disclosure, and misuse.  CUI markings indicate information shared is considered CUI and subject to special protections including physical controls associated with receipt of any media containing CUI and other safeguards for electronic materials received or generated and classified as CUI.

Researchers considering working with information classified as CUI should immediately contact the Data Front Door. The team will work directly with researchers to facilitate contract execution, advise on training requirements, provide CUI marking guidance, review handling, storage, and disposition plans are aligned with federal requirements, and ensure the research team is aware of their responsibilities when working with information classified as CUI.
