SciSwaps: Duke's research item sharing portal
SciSwaps was created with the goal of removing obstacles for conducting research, decreasing waste, and promoting scientific collaboration across Duke’s campus. The SciSwaps Teams channel should be used to exchange/share reagents, equipment, and ideas.
GO TO SCISWAPS IN TEAMS
Examples of when you should use SciSwaps:
- You’re in the middle of an experiment and you run out of a key reagent (restriction enzyme, agarose for a gel, etc.)
- You’d like to run a pilot experiment before purchasing a brand-new chemical for your lab
- You’re looking for a particular piece of equipment
- Your lab has an excess of a reagent and you’d like to share it with the larger community
- You’d like input on experimental design from other subject matter experts
SciSwaps User Guide
Quick SciSwaps facts:
- Only Duke researchers can use SciSwaps
- For all transfers between labs, ensure you are following University protocol for supplies, reagents, and equipment, especially as it relates to purchases made with federal grant dollars. Please refer to Duke’s policy on Direct Costs on Sponsored Projects, as well as the Federal-wide Cost Principles in the Uniform Guidance.
- The following things cannot be shared via SciSwaps:
- Radioactive materials
- “Particularly hazardous” and/or “high risk chemicals”, which can be found here
- Controlled substances
- Any materials obtained under an MTA or DTIF
- Data/materials obtained through an IRB
- Recombinant DNA/viral vectors that do not align with your lab’s Biological Safety Level (BSL)
- No lab should transport materials that exceed a 4-liter volume. All users are required to follow Duke OESO guidelines for transporting chemicals across campus.
