Researcher Onboarding Requirement

New Duke faculty researchers are required* to complete an onboarding session with a member of the myRESEARCHnavigator (MRN) team within 90 days of hire (or within 90 days of intending to engage in research activities). New Duke faculty researchers are defined as faculty members who conduct research and: 1) are new-to-Duke or 2) are newly independent lead researchers, or; 3) recently transitioned into faculty positions. Additionally, any Duke personnel who require approval of PI status to apply for external funding in the categories of research, clinical trial, or fellowship must complete the onboarding session.

The following parameters more specifically define the requirement:

For new Duke faculty researchers, onboarding is required if any of the following are true:

  1. Faculty will serve in a key role (PI, co-PI, or PI fellow) on active external awards and/or on an award that will be transferred from another institution
  2. The faculty member is planning to serve in a key role on proposals that would be categorized as research, clinical trial, or fellowship
  3. The faculty member (who is new to research or is currently/imminently conducting research at or through Duke or the Durham VA) will require the use of Duke resources such as IRB review, IACUC review, data storage/computational resources, or use of Duke research personnel effort.

Duke personnel requesting PI status must complete the onboarding session within 90 days of the PI status request (but not necessarily prior to application submission) for proposals categorized as research, clinical trial, or fellowship.

*Note: This requirement was first documented in the August 2021 policy released by the Office for Research & Innovation.
